BICYCLINCOLN

A few years back I attended a Midwest Active Transportation Summit in Omaha. The speakers included an ex-mayor of Madison, WI and, at the time, the Advocacy Director of Trek Bicycles. The great insight and advice they shared hit home but what made the biggest impact to me during this summit was from a forum of speakers from Omaha. This forum of trail advocates and city planners were talking up the rise of cycling infrastructure […]

Lincoln Winter Bike Challnge

With our top place finish in this year’s National Bike Challenge, we are excited to show how we are not just fair weather riders. The Lincoln Winter Bike Challenge starts December 1st. and will end February 28th. Rather then create a new site on Endomondo for the Winter Challenge, we are going to use the Lincoln page of the National Bike Challenge. If you are signed up for the National Challenge you are all ready […]

Wow! The city and cyclists of Lincoln are on a roll (celebratory pun)!  First, Lincoln, Nebraska comes in first in the nation for the National Bike Challenge, now we have been awarded a $10,000 grant from People for Bikes via their Community Grants Program along with 9 other communities across the country!  Where is this money headed? To the N-Street Protected Bikeway, of course!  This will help the Great Plains Trails Network and the Nebraska Trails […]

2013 National Bike Challenge

It was a cold wet day with even a threat of snow May 1st, the kickoff day of the 2013 National Bike Challenge. In the months to come we had temps in the 100’s and high humidity. But this is Lincoln Nebraska, and we are accustomed to riding our bikes in any of the moody weather swings we have in the mid-west. And ride our bikes we did! Lincoln had 1,117 riders sign on this […]

Action Needed: Hwy 77 and Hwy 2 reclassification

As plans for the South Beltway take shape, it’s come to our attention that little comment from cyclists has been heard. Part of the issue is that sections of HWY 77 and HWY 2 are going to be reclassified as freeways, meaning no bikes allowed on the shoulder. What will this do? Well, for cyclists wanting to ride on pavement, it’s going to be difficult and dangerous to get south of town. Alternate roadways in […]

Half Way There

We just passed the half way point for the 2013 National Bike Challenge. Right off the bat at the start of the Challenge, May 1st, Lincoln had a strong showing and we are still claiming a strong second place for class one cites, just a few points behind first place Madison WI. We have 1040 registered riders with 867 actively logging miles. Nationally we have a top five rider, two teams in the top fifty, […]

Wilderness needs your help!

The Lincoln Parks and Recreation budget is in need of restoration in order to keep up with the maintenance of Wilderness Park.  As of now, Wilderness Park is mowed only twice a year.  With the budget restored Parks and Rec would be able to mow it 4 times a year.  It does not seem like much but it would be a considerable improvement for the park and the many Lincoln residents who enjoy everything wilderness […]
