The city of Lincoln is partnering with local bike shops, BicycLincoln, a local bicycle advocacy group, The Great Plains Trails Network, and the Nebraska Bicycle Alliance to encourage residents to participate in Bike to Work Week, May 12 through 19. Several events are planned at The Jayne Snyder Trails Center in Union Plaza.
A free kick-off rally is set for 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday, May 12. Cyclists are encouraged to stop by the Jayne Snyder Trails Center for bagels, juice, and coffee on their way to work. Information on various rides and events will be available.
A week of “Bike Bingo” will be played. Participants can pick-up a card at the kick-off event or download one from the Bike Lincoln webpage located on the city’s website www.lincoln.ne.gov or at https://www.bicyclincoln.org/ Any riders completing a straight line “bingo” or completely blacking out their bingo card will be entered into a drawing for prizes from local bike shops.
Wednesday, May 17 from 5 until 7pm a bike commuter fashion show will be held at Ploughshare Brewing, 1630 P Street. Riders are encouraged to see some of the latest trends in bike clothing and accessories.
A free ice cream social will be held from 4:30 to 6pm on Friday, May 19 at the Jayne Snyder Trails Center. Riders can pick from several flavors of ice cream and toppings to enjoy their ride home.
The sixth annual National Bike Challenge enters its second week with the defending champion the city of Lincoln once again leading the nation with 404 riders accumulating 27,523 miles in just one week. Those riders, earning 20 points for each day they have ridden plus an additional one point for each mile they have ridden, have totaled 62,466 points as of Monday morning, May 8. The next closest city is Redding, CA with 269 riders and 29,594 points. Perennial contender Madison, WI is in fourth with 362 riders racking up 26,992 points. The 15th annual edition of Trail Trek will be Sunday, June 25 at Haymarket Park. This celebration of Lincoln’s trails system is sponsored by The Great Plains Trails Network.
