First, the temperatures are great this week for riding and I hope you all get out there. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind. Dirt and limestone trails will be soft and likely to leave ruts, so it’s best to stay off these surfaces. If you sink, think! Also, morning temperatures may drop to freezing, leaving a film of black ice you might not see. Larger accumulations of ice in the shade will take a little longer to melt, be careful around them, no quick turns or stops unless you’re rolling studded. It’s a great time to have fenders on your bike if you don’t like that power stripe up your back, and it helps keep some of the spray off your bike, which needs to be washed, FYI.
Now for the business at hand. If you are concerned about the rights of cyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users, LB 530 strengthens the rights of victims of crashes. Cyclist and pedestrian fatalities are still rising. Bike Walk Nebraska has been working to counter this trend by organizing a lobby day this Friday Feb. 28. If you are available and would like to advocate, come testify this Friday starting at 9:00, or send comments in support by 8:00 AM. Also, support LB 628. From Bike Walk Nebraska: “LB628 would establish a tax credit to property owners in return for an easement for trails along their land, making the development of trails more effective and less costly. Thank you to Senator Dover for sponsoring this bill. If you’d like to learn more about LB628, and the other bills we’re monitoring, head to our bill tracker here: https://bit.ly/3CZv3Z “
And, from LBK: “Lincoln Bike Kitchen is still in need of bikes! Got a bike to give? We need it! We’re specifically on the hunt for kids bikes = 16″, 20″ and 24″ bikes in good shape. Not sure if your bike can be donated? Check out the quick guide on our website to see if we can take it: https://lincolnbikekitchen.org”
Bring donations to 308 S. 21st Street, across from Open Harvest Co-op Grocery. Bike racks are located on the back side of our building (east). Please donate during our open hours (also on website). Thanks in advance! Your donation helps get more kids rolling—thank you!
