Trail Ramblings: The Bike Kitchen Is Looking For A Little Of Your Time And Talent.

”The Lincoln Bike Kitchen is a community-building organization that provides bicycles and related resources to all people. We advocate for utilitarian bicycling as a vital part of a healthy, equitable and sustainable community. We connect cycling to broader environmental and social issues through outreach, and education.”

If you don’t yet have mechanical skills, they’ll teach you the basics in service to their mission of providing bicycles and related resources to all people. Shari Weiss Shanks, the new Executive Director at the Lincoln Bike Kitchen, would like you to know the following:
Right now we have a 200 bicycle backlog to getting kids their bikes. It’s a matter of needing more volunteer mechanics and shop staff.
If you’re not interested in grease and Park Tools, we need help with data entry, processing bikes, or delivering bikes to their new homes.

More interested in shifters and derailleurs? We welcome any skill level to the mechanics crew, from high-level to none. Many of our mechanics started with no skill set. LBK will pair you up with a pro and teach you basic skills.
Last Sunday, we held a bike repair rally. Several riders in our biking community showed up to help. Although they are seasoned riders they basically have the skill level we all do – airing up tires, fixing a flat, making adjustments to your saddle, etc. By the time they left, they were doing intermediate bike repair skills and were happy to have learned techniques that can help their own riding experience.

If you want to get involved, simply email [email protected]. Our shop hours are on the website.
I can guarantee that your experience with LBK will be a game changer. You’ll be making an impact in the community while making friends with folks who are passionate about cycling and about The Lincoln Bike Kitchen. The Bike Kitchen is located at 1635 South 1st Street but will be moving to our new location in the city municipal building known as the Muny Building the week of September 15th. Address – 308 S 21st St.
Our open house is scheduled for October 10th at 10:00 a.m. The mayor will be there as well as other community members and LBK supporters. Pepe’s Bistro will be selling burritos from 11:00 to 1:00 and will be giving tours from 10:30 until 2:00 p.m. hope to see lots of cyclists from our community.

Janine, thanks for helping us connect with the cycling community!

The next Bike Repair Rally is Sept. 29, 1-4 pm at the Muny building. This is a great opportunity for cyclists to help us, and you’ll walk away with new bike repair skills. Email me at [email protected] for more info.
